Register.com Editor's Review

Register.com Company Overview

Register.com was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in New York. The Company was publicly traded between March 2000 (Nasdaq: RCOM) and November 2005, when it was acquired by Vector Capital. They startet their success as a company for domain name registration, but offer many more services today, featuring shared web hosting, reseller hosting, email hosting, domain hosting and even web design.

The "essential web hosting" plan starts from $8.95 if purchased as a 3-year plan. It includes 5 GB of storage, 250 GB of traffic (wich is both a lot) a free domain name and 1 email address.

Register.com gives a 100% uptime guarantee, automatic site backups on a regular basis and 24/7 support through an outsourced, certified telephone center.

Register.com tries to give clients an all-in-one provider solution, for not only web hosting, but web design, online marketing and any other internet-related service, one can think of.

Price Value

Register.com provides their basic hosting package at $8.95 (if purchased as a 3-year plan). This package includes 5 GB of storage space (wich will be enough for 95% of all websites today), 250 GB traffic (that's huge), a free domain name and 1 email address. We think, some more email addresses would be better. If a customer wants that, a higher hosting package offers more email options, however.

The plan includes 1 mySQL database, wich will be enough for most web hosting projects. Something that is special in this price category is, that the plan includes a dedicated IP address - a feature that usually only much more expensive plans provide. Regular automatic site backups and 24/7 customer support is included in the package.

We rate the price value of this hosting plan a little above average. The dedicated IP address is a great feature though.

Reliability and Performance

Register offers a 100% uptime guarantee. However, their web site does not mention what hardware they deploy, what internet connection they have and says nothing about the features of their data center. When measuring loading speeds of web sites hosted by Register.com however, it seems they have quiet a good network.

Register gives a 100% uptime guarantee. Not even the biggest other players give that (most of them guarantee for 99.9% uptime). A great infrastructure is necessary to have so much trust in their own abilites. Register.com consequently promisses to credit the
customer's account, in case his site would ever go down.

It seems, that the performance of Register.com is good. We can't say too much about their reliability, because we were not able to find out details about their data center and hardware. Considering their 100% uptime guarantee, we can only speculate it's high as well.

Features and Control Panel

Register.com uses cPanel, the industry-favorite solution to manage and maintain web hosting packages. cPanel is so easy to learn and use with its large icons, that most web hosting providers deploy it. In a snap, new email addresses can be created, billing functions are available and traffic statistics can be monitored with cPanel.

CPanel is a professional solution for controlling web hosting accounts.

Support

Register.com has outsourced their call center to a J.D. Power and Associates certified call center. They offer 24/7 support by telephone, live chat and email system. On top of that, they offer written tours, tips and tutorials in their help center for customers, who want to solve minor issues on their own.

We see support quality to be good. Although it's an outsourced support (we think company-owned in-house support is always superior), at least they offer 24/7 phone support and a live chat.

Conclusion

Register.com is a web services provider since a long time already. They started as one of the first providers in 1994, focussing on domain registration first, but offering a complete variety of services today.

The price value of their entry-level hosting plan is a little above average in our opinion. One email address, one database and one FTP user is not too much for $8.95 /month and a 3-year payment in advance.

Register.com offers 100% uptime guarantee. We measure good performance with their hosted websites, however we lack detailed background information about their server hardware and their data center architecture. We rate their performance and reliability to be good by the facts we know.

Using the industry-leading cPanel as an account management software is high-class. With their outsourced support, they provide 24/7 phone and live chat assistance.

We see Register.com as an over-average hosting provider. If one wants a complete provider, offering all kinds of services, Register.com is a good choice.

Register is a pretty decent host. Sure, their support system could be a little better and their techs do not know too much. But I am experienced in building online sites. So for me, after some time of tinkering with sites, I have learned how to deal with them. The site looks good and everything runs pretty smoothly. they do not really do much in terms of service or support, but if you like low prices, then you will like what the site offers to you as a customer.

As a home business owner, I have been with Register.com for just over three years now. They are not the best, but I have been with other hosting companies in the past that were far worst.

for the price, it is hard to expect you are really going to get all of the promises that they guarantee to you. All that said, the first 2.5 years were okay. the site stayed up, it looked good, and prices were low.

Now, I am dealing with all the issues that other complaints have noted. I can't get in touch with customer service, my site is always down and they never know how to answer a simple question when you finally do get in touch with a customer service rep. I do not know if I can take this poor service for much longer. If things do not change, it is time to part ways and to cut my losses with Register.com.

Cheap domains, 99% uptime, good support were some of the things that I have experienced. It has only been a couple of months and I am still a bit weary as I have read so many poor reviews. But for me so far, things have been pretty good. At such a low price, I am very happy that they have gone this well. I do not know what is going to happen as the time progresses, but if they continue to provide me services like they have and if my site success continues to go up then I will be very happy that I am getting such a steal of a deal. The one issue I did have was learning the control panel, which is foreign to any other site panel I have ever seen in the past. But, if you take the time to see what it is, to learn how to use the icons and to learn how to use the site builder features, you are going to get the hang of it eventually. It is not the best looking hosting provider and they don't have the mass marketing ads other big companies have, but I guess this is what allows them to keep their rates so low. For me, the low price and my site being up is all that matters at the present time.

After three day long, email outages happening more than once in only a four month window, I had to make a switch. Not only did my email support go down for my customers, but my sight was always down as well. It was too much to deal with, especially in only a few short months of having been a customer of theirs. When I would call in, they would not know what to say. they did not have an answer as to why they were having such difficulties, nor could they give me a time frame for things to get back up and running properly. I was really disappointed with this host, their service and the fact that it seemed as if nobody knew what they were talking about when you called in for a support issue. It was a very short relationship that I had with the host, but I can truly say it was one of the worst that I have ever had with online hosting.

I would not recommend them. their pricing is low, but the quality of their services is much lower.

Prior to signing up, I wish I had taken heed to the warnings and poor reviews I had read. too bad the low price tricked me, and drew me in, like so many other customers. Support was absolutely horrible. on the very first day of building my site, their servers were down more than once and I was not able to do anything. I called in and it seemed that I waited nearly one hour for a response, only for them to tell me they did not have any idea when things would be back up. I was very unhappy. when things finally were up, their control panel was a mess and very difficult to work with, so building the site was not something too easy to do either. I am no longer a customer. if you are someone like myself and are considering them for the all too low price point, do not waste your time or money. pay a little more for a better hosting service provider.
