Yahoo Hosting Editor's Review

Yahoo Hosting Company Overview

Yahoo! is one of the mega-companies in internet business and we all know them. However, only a few people know, that Yahoo! provides web hosting services as well.

Yahoo! was founded in 1994 and went public in 1996. However, hosting services started in 2002 labeled "Yahoo! Small Business". Yahoo! has its headquarters in Sunnyvale, California and runs many additional offices on all continents, employing more than 13,000 people.

Due to their substantial brand power, Yahoo! became one of the largest web hosting providers in the world. Their hosting plans are aimed towards individuals and small to medium-sized businesses. The features they offer ar rather aimed at beginners, than towards experienced power users. They offer shared hosting plans only, focusing the Linux operating system.

Yahoo! Hosting strives to provide their customers with 99.9% uptime - we were not able to find an explicit guarantee for that on their web site, however. But they offer an explicit 30-day-money-back guarantee. They also offer 24/7 technical support via telephone and email.

Price Value

Compared to other providers in the web hosting industry, Yahoo! web hosting packages are quiet simple. It seems, their hosting offers are not aimed at programming freaks, but rather designed for newbies with little knowledge and basic requirements. However, the package comes with highlights as well.

The basic hosting plan starts at $9.99 /month (if purchased as a one year plan) and the first 3 months' price is even lower: only $6.47/month. This price is slightly higher, than similar web hosting plans cost at other hosting providers .

The package offers unlimited storage space, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited email and a free domain name. However, we recommend you to read the disclaimer on the Yahoo! Hosting site, so you fully understand what "unlimited" means in this context for them.

Yahoo! offers a good site builder application and an online store builder with credit card processing, that can be integrated into a Yahoo! mall. The website of Yahoo! Hosting provides a lot of information about how to get a website up and running, market it online and so on.

For unexperienced users, Yahoo! hosting offers a good package. Experienced users will feel limited by the package though, because a lot of details in programing languages, databases, multimedia features and web based applications such as forums, content management systems, galleries, will simply not work.

We think the price value of this package is a little too high, compared to the features other professional web hosting providers give with lower prices.

Reliability and Performance

Because Yahoo! runs data centers of enormous size for their other services, it's no surprise they offer very high performance and reliability. Can you imagine Yahoo!'s website being down or extremely slow? That will never happen and they installed the infrastructure to assure that. Yahoo! Hosting clients enjoy the benefits of this equipment and know-how. The 99.9% uptime, that is mentioned on the Yahoo! Hosting web site will usually be 100%. We were not able to find an explicit guarantee for that, though - like many other professional hosting companies give.

It was not possible for us to find out, what exact hardware Yahoo! Hosting uses. However, that can be due to they have many data centers in different locations and since a long time. So we suppose, the hardware they use is mixed and will be organized in server-pools with backening mirrored RAID storage units, that hold the files. This setup is known in the professional hosting industry to assure both, the highest reliability and the fastest performance. When measuring speeds of web sites hosted by Yahoo!, we found out, the performance was extremely fast and stable. Yahoo! Hosting performs data backups to remote data centers for security on a regular basis.

Considering all this, we rate performance and reliability of Yahoo! web hosting to be extremely high.

Features and Control Panel

Yahoo! deploys a self-developed control panel, that has excellent features. It helps unexperienced users to maintain every aspect of their web hosting account. The site can be built with it, files can be transferred by FTP, it shows visitor statistics, can be used to perform site backups, create email addresses and much more.

Yahoo! Hosting's control panel is an easy to use and excellent tool for managing hosting accounts.

Support

Yahoo! Hosting offers 24/7 toll free support by telephone and help desk ticket system in various languages. Because their hosting package is rather aimed at newbies to hosting and web site building, their staff is trained to help customers even with the most basic issues.

Additionally to live support, Yahoo! Hosting offers an extensive knowledgebase, "getting-started" guides and many video tutorials.

Although, there are even higher support levels in the hosting industry (like a guarantee to pick up a phone call in less than 2 minutes), support quality at Yahoo! web hosting is very high.

Conclusion

Yahoo! is one of the largest players in world wide internet business. Their giant infrastructure, brand and technical know-how is a real advantage in hosting with them, because the customer will participate in these benefits.

The price value is a little low, compared to the features and prices of other web hosts. However, we see it through the exes of experts, and we are not the aimed clients of Yahoo! Hosting, wich rather aims at beginners and newbies. They would not even ask some features, that we would like to have. Other features are great for beginners however, like the built in site builder, e-commerce applications and visitor statistics.

The reliability and performance of the Yahoo! data centers is outstanding. The proprietary control panel and the support are of very high quality.

Yahoo! Hosting is great for beginners and unexperienced customers, wich will appreciate the many features designed for them. Power-users will feel limited and are better off with other hosting providers, offering much more features for experts.

Yahoo has pretty decent features and they provide you with quite a few bonuses in terms of marketing and online promotions. But I have had quite a few issues with my site downtime. Overall, Yahoo is a pretty good hosting company, but it seems they are having a few problems as of late.

I have been with them for just over four years and things were smooth for that time. sure, the site went down every once in a while, but not much else. Now it seems as if my site is down at least once a week. It's not for long but it does go down which does cause me some worry.

I am hoping they get things fixed as I do like the product they have offered and the services they have provided.

I have gone through several hosts over the years and what I find so hard about working with them was the initial set up phase. I would figure with such a big company like Yahoo, they would have a more user friendly interface and control panel, but I did not find this to be the case. I found it very hard to build my site and I found it hard to find information about site visitors when I was looking for it. As far as the actual layout and my site, uptime is pretty good and I can control the features, once I learned how to use things.

It does require a learning curve, especially if you are used to working with something as simple as c panel. But over time you will get the hang of it.

I do not love their hosting and the page layout, but I do like the way my site looks and the fact that it is usually up and running without a hitch.

The price is quite ok, so this is a point that you have to take in to account if you do decide you are going to work with Yahoo as a host.

For a small price, unlimited disk space and file transfers could not have been easier. and, I get unlimited emails as well. Which is great if you support your customers through more than one account.

If you are looking for the easiest control panel and host to work with, then they might not be the best. It does take some time to get used to their layout and the content you are working with through their hosting.

But if you are the customer that wants a low price point, wants to have simplified transfers and wants a host that is usually up, then you are going to appreciate what they have to offer.

As I have gone through several hosts in the past, I do consider the fact that they are one with the greatest uptime which is very important as a business owner. If you care about your customer and do not want to overspend, and if you are willing to learn their features and control panel, then you are going to love what Yahoo has to offer to you.

At such a cheap price and with unlimited features, it is hard to beat Yahoo hosting. but, as other complaints have stated, they do not have the best support out there.

Downtime is not a problem often, but if it does occur you can expect your site to go down for at least one hour. I have not had many issues with them, but at the same time they have not been the perfect host either.

At such a low price per month, it is really hard to expect much more from Yahoo.

If you can get in touch, their customer service is great. the problem is, that it is so hard for you to actually get through and to speak to a service agent when you are having a problem with your site. I have waited on hold for one hour on more than one instance, which is something I find to be unacceptable, especially with such a large company. But, other than this, they are a good hosting company. It seems I have to call in for issues on a regular basis which is something that I would not expect from such a large name company and provider. If you have ever done business with most other big hosts you will know that this is the case. If they can fix the flaws in their service and support, they are a company that does provide a pretty good hosting package.

The problem that I find with Yahoo, is the fact that everything they take as a security breach. In one year, they have closed down my administrator's email, saying they were afraid of hacking. Both instances it was me (the site owner), trying to log in and having problems doing so.

Although they get my site back up and running, they should know who is accessing the site and when there is really a breach versus when it is someone who actually works for the site.

In terms of actual hosting and downtime, I do not have many issues with this at all. Yahoo has great service and they are always there when you have to call which is quite often for me.

I wish they would reestablish their online security, as it is needed but they should also have methods of fixing things. Overall, they are a good host, but they do have flaws as you are going to experience with nearly any other online host that you choose to do business with.
